Us

New Media Art Club (NMAC) is a community interest company started in 2023 to better the opportunities for Leicester new media artists to learn new skills and exhibit their work. It is a formalised evolution of the practice of Sean Carroll and Anoushka Carroll; two local artist-producers.

NMAC aims to facilitate workshops, exhibitions, networking and employment opportunities for Leicester new media artists.

NMAC also facilitates a "co-working studio lab" (CoLab) to realise the above goals.

Thanks to National Lottery Project Grants Arts Council England @acegrams for awarding us another successful project grant of support for COMPUTALA!

COMPUTALA is a festival in partnership with @lcbdepot ‘s Digital Art Season. We combine forces every January to bring and showcase exciting creative technology/new media/digital art in Leicester. 2026’s theme will be AI and will include bootcamp residencies, workshops, exhibitions, and a day conference.

We’re working with @nojobsinthearts @kalaartscic @artaifestleics @flordefuega @naotohieda @mark_towers @seancuttlefish @lioness.princess @timothiellim

Where do we draw the lines between human intimacy and technological intervention? Tender Machines explores how “You and Me” transforms in an age where AI systems are increasingly designed to mirror, anticipate, and fulfil our needs. This pavilion explores the complex emotional landscape that unfolds when machines are designed to prioritise our satisfaction and examines how the fundamental aspects of human connection, including love, friendship, and understanding, adapt as AI systems become part of our daily emotional fabric.

Tender Machines is looking for work that explores:
-When does "the system" enhance our human connections, and when does it create distance?
-How do we navigate relationships where AI is both facilitator and participant?
-What happens to the poetry of "you and me" when algorithms help write our love letters, interpret our emotions, and mediate our conversations?
-Where do we draw the lines between human intimacy and technological intervention?

Through these mediums:
-Web collage
-Interactive narrative
-Moving image
-Chat bots
-Combinations of the above

The work may use AI or reflect on AI and intimacy, or both!

Explore the fascinating history of fortune-telling games and devices while learning to create your own with Downpour, a user-friendly game-making tool. The workshop will include:

-A discussion on historical fortune-telling devices, from ancient examples to modern interpretations.

-A seminar-style session where we play and analyse indie games (including some Downpour games) about fortune-telling.

An introduction to using Downpour.

-A hands-on creative session where you’ll design and build your own fortune-telling game or device, using craft materials and support from the instructor.

-A final showcase to share and discuss everyone’s creations.

Duration: Approximately 2.5 hours.

What you'll need:

Bring your smartphone. You can install Downpour (https://downpour.games) in advance if you'd like.

If there's a particular book or magazine you find resonant and might find it interesting to base your fortune-teller on, bring that along too. You can cut it up and then take photos of it, or you can just take photos of it.

About the artist:

V Buckenham @vtwentyone is the creator of Downpour, an app that makes it easy to make little games on your phone. Before that, she was the creator of Cheap Bots Done Quick, a website that made it easy to make little Twitter bots on your computer. She's also worked as a game designer and developer on titles like Beasts of Balance and Mutazione, and as a curator with Now Play This and Wild Rumpus.

Quarterly meet up for Ableton enthusiasts. Ableton makes software, hardware and other creative tools for a global community of music makers. Run by Paul Smith and Ableton Certified Trainer Mark Towers.

In our last session, Mark Towers showcased his use of his modular synth and some cool sound design tricks using Ableton's stock plug-ins. In February's session, Paul Smith a.k.a Stablegate Music will be walking through his latest melodic Techno track, Dark Confusion, which is being released by TS Records on Jan 24th. This will demonstrate a different method of sound creativity than Mark showcased in our last meeting.

This walk-through will focus on:
Using templates to speed up your production
Channel, clip labelling and colouring
Layering stock/samples and preset sounds
Reference tracks for inspiration and structure guidance
Successful mixing techniques
Master bus plugin chain

Time permitting, we can also demonstrate the use of Splice and it's vast online library of sounds to enhance your creativity.

As ever, it's an interactive, open forum, feel free to ask questions and propose topics for inclusion in future meetings.

KIDS ACTIVITIES for COMPUTALA January 2025!

Arts Award Discover: Computer Drawing with Micro:bit Robots

Over 2 days, explore coding, robots, and digital arts and earn an Arts Award Discover, accredited by Trinity College London. Deliver by Dr Sean Clark @seancuttlefish

Sunday 12th January, 12-5pm
Sunday 19th January, 12-5pm

The sessions are a part of the same course, so you'll need to attend both to achieve the certificate.

On the first day of the course, attendees will discover more about the history of computer art and then learn how to use a tiny Micro:bit computer to control a MiniBit drawing robot.

On the second day, attendees will learn how to create more advanced drawings and how to program their robot to interact with other drawing robots to make a large collaborative computer artwork.

KIDS ACTIVITIES for COMPUTALA January 2025!

Arts Award Discover: Computer Drawing with Micro:bit Robots

Over 2 days, explore coding, robots, and digital arts and earn an Arts Award Discover, accredited by Trinity College London. Deliver by Dr Sean Clark @seancuttlefish

Sunday 12th January, 12-5pm
Sunday 19th January, 12-5pm

The sessions are a part of the same course, so you'll need to attend both to achieve the certificate.

On the first day of the course, attendees will discover more about the history of computer art and then learn how to use a tiny Micro:bit computer to control a MiniBit drawing robot.

On the second day, attendees will learn how to create more advanced drawings and how to program their robot to interact with other drawing robots to make a large collaborative computer artwork.

Our artist bootcamp residencies are intensive, short-term programs designed to help artists rapidly develop their skills, ideas, and professional practices. The work that is made will be exhibited in Lightbox Gallery at @lcbdepot in January 2025.

We have 3x £900 (inclusive of VAT) to award artists that want to experiment with AR technology in their practice. The 2 day session (7th-8th January 2025) will be lead by @ndelap in our CoLab space in Leicester. The exhibition opens on 10th January! This is designed to be a fun challenge for artists.

Here at NMAC one of our core aims is to provide opportunities for Leicester digital (and all the other terms for artists working with technology), so being able to provide 2 bootcamp residencies this time is amazing and we're so excited!

The work produced for the first residency will go alongside the open call exhibition in Lightbox Gallery, and the participants of the second residency will perform at the closing party/performance night on @lastfridaylcb

In this talk, Sean Clark from Interact will present his latest research in uncovering Leicester’s surprising rich Digital Art Heritage. From the late 1960s until the present day Leicester has played host to many important digital artists and has seen significant events and exhibitions. He will also discus his latest work, removing information relating to the “Invention of Problems” events in 1970/1971.

During the session we will pick 1 or 2 activities to do from the book and tackle it together (consulting Chat GPT along the way).

This meet up is for anyone who is interested in these topics; you don't need to be adept at coding/programming.

It's also part of LCB Depot's 20th anniversary celebrations and is followed by a drinks mixer from 7pm.
